The Hepworth, Wakefield

Beautiful photo of Barbara Hepworth at work by photographer Peter Keen (1928-2009)

On May 21st 2011 The Hepworth, Wakefield will be opening...named after the famous sculptor Barbara Hepworth who grew up in the lovely West Yorkshire (as have I) it will be the largest gallery built since The Tate, St Ives.

We already have the Yorkshire Sculpture Park down the road which was given a massive re-jig a few years ago and has wonderful past and present exhibitions, a favourite being David Nash with his wooden sculptures (also shown at Abbot Hall Gallery, Kendal) and Rob Ryans stencils on the main building's windows.

There is already so much going on arts wise in West Yorks. but by placing a gallery (one of the largest outside of London) a statement is being made in the fact that they are keeping it in the area.

I love the fact that they have built the gallery in the location Hepworth grew up but also because they are recongising the area as a place which should be invested in culturally and financially. There is already so much artistic and creative talent in W.Yorks. I personally think this comes from the methodological, hands-on approch manufacturing jobs inlayed into people which consequently impacted on surroundings.

im intrigued to say the least
